Most high-functioning, sensitive women swing between two survival modes:

  • Pressure: pleasing, perfectionism, rushing, over-responsibility

  • Escape: shutting down, disappearing, numbness, “I want to run away”

    This reset gives you a third option: Safety.


By pressure vs. escape, I mean the two most common ways women seem to protect themselves when they feel activated, unseen, overwhelmed, or unsafe.

Pressure is the part that says:

  • push harder

  • figure it out now

  • be better

  • hurry up

  • do more

  • fix it

  • don’t stop

  • don’t disappoint anyone

It can look like:

  • perfectionism

  • pleasing

  • rushing

  • overthinking

  • overworking

  • obsessing

  • trying to control everything

  • forcing yourself to keep going even when your body is saying no

It usually sounds like:

“I just need to get it together.”

“I don’t have time for this.”

“Let me do one more thing.”

“Why am I like this?”

Escape is the opposite protective response.

It says:

  • I can’t do this

  • get me out of here

  • shut it down

  • disappear

  • avoid this

  • numb out

  • leave before I get hurt

It can look like:

  • withdrawing

  • shutting down

  • dissociating

  • procrastinating

  • canceling

  • avoiding conversations

  • fantasizing about running away

  • going numb

  • scrolling, zoning out, disappearing emotionally

It usually sounds like:

“I want to be left alone.”

“I can’t deal with this right now.”

“I want to disappear.”

“I should just leave.”

What I’m noticing in my work with clients is that
many women swing between the two.

They don’t live in just one pattern. They often go:

  • pressure first: push, please, perfect, rush

  • then escape: crash, numb, resent, withdraw, fantasize about leaving

Or sometimes the reverse:

  • they feel overwhelmed and want to disappear

  • then shame kicks in and they pressure themselves to perform again
